Through various chats with the tutors and the different artists which I have looked at I have found that the work of Paul Smith is most like the style which I want to work in the style of and progress in. I really like Smiths work especially on the s/s 18 collection where he has looked at a Hawaiian style shirt. I think that this style of clothing really does break the stereotype of a traditional man as these shirts are often bold and have colours on them which don’t represent a traditional man but does represent a new 21st century man. I really like how he uses different styles in his work which create different compositions for different garments, this is something which I could take advantage of with my surface patterns. I think that this style of working would really suit quite a light-hearted surface pattern with a message in it and with it being quite colourful and expressive it will fit the brief.

I think that His work as a whole is really interesting as he looks at various different items to get his surface pattern onto. I am quite interested in his work which he did with mini cooper and porche also as I think that this I could also use in my work to create a scene like in my fmp last year with the diner style. I could possibly make a surface pattern and apply it onto a car seat for example which would show the contradiction of old and new but also how a man can still be interested in his possessions but also be embracing the new 21st century man.
