drawing of men from different backgrounds

From my questionnaire result I got some different industries and professions where stereo-typically you would find a man in employment theses I have done some basic illustrations of and hopefully will be able to tackle these stereotypes in this way. I have used Lauren Mortimer as inspiration for these quick sketches. I really like the concept of her illustrations with the outfits being separated and are clear on their own. At the start of the project this was a potential outcome to begin with, some kind of mix and match style male dolls with the different outfits for the stereotypes of men and what they actually wear and possess. I believe that these basic illustrations I could possibly use in the future as I think that there is a lot of possible routes which I could go down and could incorporate these into a wallpaper design or even gift wrap with customise able items. I have chosen 4 different people to illustrate a teenager represented by Grayson Perry and his ‘All man’ documentary, this one I have shown the violence and brutish view of manhood with the knife and having to be strong, there is also the other items the bottle of alcohol and cigarettes which I think suit the stereotype well. I have also looked at a rich business man with his fancy car and electronics because this again is a stereotype of the wealthy areas suits etc. I have also looked at the typical feminine man stereotype with slightly camp way of dressing and the typical accessories with the scarf beanie and items such as a big sunhat sunglasses and bracelets. I want to eventually look at adding colour to these prints using different Medias to change up the style as I want to find the best way of making the colour look good.

tools print

I have used the drawings of the various tools to create a very basic surface pattern. I have taken the pencil drawings and created silhouettes out of the images which i can use to laser cut and other techniques. I have tried to create quite a fluid pattern design with the tools not all being the same direction and repeats. This print i think will work really well when screen printed as it will create alot of movement with the directional changes.

tools etching

I have been looking at the tools and have found that when laser cut out of tools such as the saw that you can create really nice up cycled pieces. I had already got a basic tools print so I wanted to explore how this would work on tools in particular a saw as I had one to hand. I took the tools print and first cut it out on card using the laser cutter as I wanted to see how the print would look big scale and this looks fine but did leave some burnt edges as I think the settings were too high, however it did look like a nice print. If I was to change the print in anyway I would make some of the lines thicker as some of them were too thin to cut and just left a gap where paper should have been. I then tried it on the saw we already had reservations about if this would work because of the thickness of the metal. I and Rob played around with the strength of the laser to try and get it to cut through but unfortunately wasn’t strong enough and I would need to use engineering’s more powerful laser. I then tried to engrave onto the saw instead of cut through it which I think would have more of a personalisation style to it. This again however had no effect as the laser was just bouncing off it, so I started playing around with techniques to make it etch. I then tried to paint the saw and then try and engrave into this as it’s a layer on top of the saw and should work and did. I got a result of a sort as it did etch the paint off but it wasn’t the neatest lines and didn’t look much defined. I think that if I was to do this again I would use the stronger laser in engineering as you get the full cut out which I think is what would look better than the etching as you can’t really see the engraving unless you’re looking at it straight which isn’t very effective.
