Being a MAN In The 21ST Century

I have found this article about being a man in the 21st century, this acts as a type of guide for someone who had just woken up after a 50 year sleep. There was some interesting comments on this article which I think relate massively to my project and have inspired some of my pieces. The main points I took from this article are the job roles in society, the article reads

There is no “men’s work” and “women’s work”, there is only work.

I found this quote really interesting because from my questionnaire research from the different age ranges there still seems to be a general consensus that there is men’s jobs and women’s jobs with a lot of the responses I got being around the tradesmen roles as they involve operating heavy machinery and lifting heavy objects, this would suggest that there is still certain things which are classified as a ‘mans’ job. I also found that in this article it talks more about the caring fatherly side to men in the 21st century with increasing numbers of men being stay at home dads and dealing with things such as the laundry and grocery shopping which in the past has been viewed as a ‘woman’s’ job.

I have contrasted these views in my work by using text such as #unmasculine and #papapose these are comments from Piers Morgan’s twitter account where he uses these comments to describe a press photo of Daniel Craig or strong, sporty, smart and successful James bond 007, where he was captured carrying his child in a baby sling. I think that these type of comments show a generational view on men’s image in the world where they should be more like James Bond and not as Daniel Craig was pictured. I have explored the view of men’s feminine sides in my project to try and combat and release the new 21st century man more.
